How to Plan the Perfect Surprise Proposal in Bali

There's a particular kind of panic that comes with planning a proposal abroad. You want it to be beautiful, private, and completely unforgettable — but you're doing it in a country you may not know, often while keeping a secret from the person who usually helps you plan everything.

At Avana Bamboo Villas, we've helped 22 couples do exactly this. Perched on a cliff near Sidemen in east Bali, our bamboo villas were almost designed for the moment: a private infinity pool over the valley, Mount Agung on one side, the Indian Ocean on the other, and not a single other guest to interrupt.

Here's how we help you pull it off.

We handle the setup, so you can just be present

The last thing you want on the day is to be arranging flowers while trying to act natural. So we do it for you. A typical Avana proposal setup includes:

Flower arrangements, petals, candles and personalized signage
The setting staged at the spot with the best light and view
Everything ready before you arrive back at the villa, so the reveal is seamless

The cover story

The hardest part of a surprise is the hour before it — and that's where we come in. Together we'll work out a believable reason to have you both in the right place at the right time. It might be a sunset dinner where the fourth course arrives as a ring on a platter instead of dessert. It might be a photoshoot that ends with you on one knee. Or it might be something wilder that we dream up together. Whatever it is, your partner won't see it coming until the moment arrives.

A photographer, hidden in the perfect spot

You only get to propose once, and the expression on your partner's face lasts seconds. We position a photographer out of sight, framed on the exact spot, to catch the moment as it actually happens — not a staged re-enactment afterwards. You leave with the story and the photographs.

Two real Avana proposals

Planning proposals has become something of a passion for our team. Working with each couple, we get as creative as they want to be. Here are two that we loved.

The surprise villa. One couple arrived believing they were simply on a day tour — she had no idea they were even booked to stay with us. Their driver, quietly in on the plan, suggested they stop to see a villa with a beautiful view, just nearby. Our team offered to show them one that happened to be "decorated for a guest arriving later that day." The two of them stepped inside, alone, and found themselves standing in the middle of a heart of flowers. Our photographer was waiting where they couldn't see him. With almost no warning, her partner dropped to one knee — and then revealed that the villa wasn't someone else's at all. It was the start of their early honeymoon.

The photoshoot. For Kurt, who stayed with us in June 2026, we arranged something quieter. The romantic dinner and flower arrangements were set up before the couple arrived. The cover story was a photoshoot — Kurt told his partner he'd booked a session to document their stay. Midway through, the photographer guided her to face the valley for a solo portrait. As she looked out at the view, Kurt stepped forward. Our photographer and drone caught every second.
